For many StoneBridge alumni, Coach Cal Woolard is an embedded figure in their high school experience and memories. He has been an essential part of the community since the late 1990s.
His profound influence on students over the years was honored recently by alumni, students and parents at the Spring Alumni Basketball Game held May 6.
Coach Cal started at StoneBridge as a coach before becoming the school’s athletic director in 1998. When he started as athletic director, the school had only three teams–boys basketball, girls basketball and baseball. During his tenure, the number of teams grew to 23!
“Coach Cal would not only make you feel like you could do anything, he would also help you do it,” Jackie Shaw, former assistant athletic director, said.
This characteristic was essential to taking the 2007 Boys Varsity Basketball team through a great season and a victory at the VISAA state championship.
“We don’t have enough words to truly describe how important Cal is to our StoneBridge community, but we thank him for his service,” current Athletic Director, Shannon Morisi, said at the alumni game.
Former Assistant Athletic Director Kevin Riley also took time during halftime to honor his former coworker. (Watch the video for his remarks following Coach Morisi.)
Coach Cal’s spirt of service continues as he works at the school to maintain the campus, drives the bus to games and field trips, and helps the school as needed.
During halftime at the May 6 alumni game, Coach Cal was presented with a special StoneBridge baseball cap and a polo shirt personalized with “Coach Cal.”
Seven alumni returned to campus to play that day, including Johnnie Best (2021), Danny Hines (2020), Ryan Martin (2006), Nick Parr (2003), Landon Wells (2021), Wesley Wetherbee (2017), and Tayvion White (2021). In a game that was tied 23-23 at halftime, the alumni went on to win the game, 52-43.
