Grandparents play a vital role in the lives of families and communities. They are often the keepers of tradition, wisdom, and love, offering a unique bridge between generations. Their life experiences, stories, and guidance provide invaluable lessons to younger generations, helping to shape their character and strengthen family bonds. Gabe Nunziata, a senior at StoneBridge School, recently addressed a room full of StoneBridge grandparents with his own story during this year’s Grandparents and Special Friends Day. Following is his message:
I’d like to share with you about my grandparents. Although they could not make it today, they have played a crucial role in my life–one for which I am truly grateful. I feel blessed that my grandparents have always lived close enough that as I grew up, I saw and visited them often. We have spent many weekends, holidays, and beach vacations together. I have great memories with them carving turkeys, baking cookies, and of course, watching college football.
My grandad is the reason I love college football. Thanks to him, I proudly wear crimson for his beloved University of Alabama. All of his grandkids spoke the words, “Roll Tide!” as soon as he could get ahold of them. College football creates connection in my family and I love the fact that it goes all the way back to his father, a man I have never met but can imagine so much of what he’s like because of the way my grandad talks about him. Of course, I had to add a plot twist and chose to attend the University of Tennessee next year. I haven’t quite broken the news to my grandad yet, so if you see him, don’t tell him.

I have great memories of my grandparents coming to take care of us and that time spent with them was not only a blessing to my parents but also to us. These visits always included time in the kitchen. My Grandmom loves to cook–but I think even more than cooking, she loved including her grandchildren however she could in the kitchen. Because of her cooking, our family has a tradition of coming together. So many family gatherings have turned into great taco feasts, where laughter and stories are shared around the table. That’s what I cherish the most–the memories tied to it. Well, also the tacos.
As I have gotten older, I am now able to see how grandparents play such a vital role in our lives. They’re like the seasoned players on the field, teaching us the ropes, showing us the right plays, and even cheering us on from the sidelines. They bring wisdom, laughter, and warmth. Grandad with his football insights and Grandmom with her culinary masterpieces have shaped who I am today.
When we talk about family, often we immediately think of our parents. But I truly believe that our grandparents are the unsung heroes–those patient teachers who’ve been there since day one. They tell us stories of their youth, remind us not to take life too seriously, and set great examples of resilience.
So, thank you, Grandmom and Grandad. Thank you for the football games, thank you for the tacos, and thank you for the countless memories we’ve created together. You both mean the world to me and I hope I can make you as proud as you’ve made me. Thank you and Go Vols!
